Overview
ACCE thesis
Pangaea Logistics runs a fleet of dry bulk vessels, mostly handysize and supramax ships that carry grains, minerals and forest products on short- and medium-haul routes, with a sizable part of the fleet in pooling arrangements. The structural appeal is the mix: a sub-scale-friendly niche where smaller ships can fill ports that larger vessels cannot, which tends to support steadier utilisation than the spot-heavy large-ship segment. Revenue grew 19.4% in the period under review, and the stock trades on 10.8x trailing earnings and 8.2x forward earnings, so the market is pricing in a meaningful earnings decline or simply not paying for the growth. A 20.5% gross margin, 11.4% operating margin and 10.4% return on equity are respectable for a capital-intensive shipper, though they are highly sensitive to charter rates, which is the main thing to test. At roughly 515M in market capitalisation with no index membership, the name sits below the radar of many larger funds, which is one reason it may be mispriced, and it merits a look at the fleet age, charter coverage and debt schedule before any conclusion is reached.
