Overview
ACCE thesis
Nexstar Media Group owns and operates local television stations across the US, many of them affiliated with the major networks, and it runs The CW network alongside a national syndication arm. Its moat is local retransmission and carriage economics: broadcast stations that carry network programming and local news earn recurring fees from pay-TV distributors, a revenue stream that is hard to replicate and has historically been resilient to cord-cutting. The near-term swing factor is the acquisition of Tegna, which would combine two large station groups and raise the company's reach and scale in retransmission negotiations. The stock screens cheap on forward earnings at 8.9x against a trailing P/E of 31.2x, a gap that suggests the market is looking through depressed trailing profit toward a much stronger earnings base, while reported revenue growth of 62.2% is largely a function of the acquisition rather than organic demand. The 21.2% operating margin and 55.1% gross margin show the station economics are working, but the 7.4% return on equity reflects the heavy debt load taken on to fund growth, which is the first thing a PM should test.
