Autohome runs China's largest online auto marketplace, with its core products being the Autohome website and app that give car buyers pricing, reviews and dealer leads, plus dealer-facing software and financing services. The moat is scale and data: it is the default starting point for Chinese car shoppers, and its dealer network is the sales channel automakers depend on. The current problem is the top line, with revenue down 31.9% as Chinese auto dealers cut advertising spend amid a brutal price war and a sharp drop in dealer profitability. Even so, the 74% gross margin and 10.8% operating margin show the business still earns well on the revenue it keeps, and at 16.8x forward earnings the market is pricing in little recovery. The decision in front of us is whether a China auto cycle turn and a stabilising dealer base can restore growth, which is worth testing against the sector data before any position is considered.
