Overview
ACCE thesis
AdvanSix makes nylon 6 resins and caprolactam, along with ammonium sulfate fertilizer and other specialty chemicals, primarily from its Hopewell, Virginia and Chesterfield operations. The core of the business is a commodity chain tied to benzene, cyclohexane and ammonia feedstocks, so earnings swing with petrochemical spreads and there is little pricing power to lean on. Its gross margin of 7.3% and operating margin of 2.1% sit at the thin end of the chemicals group, and return on equity is slightly negative at -2.2%, which is the main reason the name scores poorly here. Revenue growth of 2.7% is positive but modest, and with no trailing or forward earnings multiple available, valuation has to be built from cash flow and asset value rather than read off a P/E. The stock is small, at roughly $446M market capitalization, and sits outside major indices, so it is a candidate for a deeper look only if spread recovery in nylon and fertilizer is the thesis you want to test.
