Overview
ACCE thesis
Japan Post Insurance writes life and cancer-type policies through the Japan Post Group's counter network, and its distribution is the asset: it sells through the same post offices that customers already visit for banking and postal services. The group's structural tailwind is the Japanese government's ongoing sell-down of its stake and the post-privatisation push to lift returns, which has pressed management toward buybacks and higher payouts. At a trailing P/E of 11.2 and a forward P/E of 7.4, the market is pricing in a meaningful earnings decline or heavy scepticism about the forecast, against a reported 13.2% revenue growth and a 21.8% operating margin. The low ROE of 4.2% is the obvious counterpoint: the balance sheet is large and the equity return is thin, so the thesis rests on whether capital returns and margin discipline close that gap. The company is outside major indices, which may partly explain the discount, and it merits a deeper look at the earnings bridge and the solvency and investment-portfolio disclosures.
