Toyo Seikan makes metal and plastic containers, including beverage cans, food cans, PET bottles and closures, and it is one of the larger packaging groups in Japan. The company's edge is its scale in Japanese can and closure manufacturing and its entrenched customer relationships with food, beverage and household product makers, which tend to be sticky because switching packaging suppliers requires requalification. Revenue growth of 11.4% is well ahead of what a mature packaging business usually posts, which points to pricing pass-through and volume gains rather than a stagnant core. The margins are thin, though: a 14.8% gross margin and 7.6% operating margin leave little room for input-cost swings in aluminum, steel and resin, and ROE of 7.8% is modest for the capital employed. At a trailing P/E of 13.0 the stock is not expensive for a business with this growth, so the question for a deeper look is whether the top-line momentum can convert into better operating margins.
