Vista Energy is an Argentine oil and gas producer whose output comes mainly from the Vaca Muerta shale formation in Neuquén, where it runs unconventional horizontal wells and sells crude and natural gas. Its edge is scale in one of the few shale basins outside North America with real horizontal drilling economics, and the data show it converting that into cash: a 44.2% operating margin, 29.8% return on equity and revenue growth of 102.3%. The growth driver is continued Vaca Muerta development, and the question for a portfolio manager is whether that pace of expansion can be sustained at reasonable capital cost. At 9.1 times trailing earnings and 6.3 times forward earnings, the market is pricing in a meaningful earnings decline, which is either a sign of skepticism about Argentine political and currency risk or an opportunity if that risk is discounted too heavily. The company carries no index membership at a 7.7 billion dollar market capitalization, so it sits outside the coverage and flow that often narrows such valuation gaps, and that alone merits a deeper look.
