VirnetX licenses its secure communications patent portfolio, the technology behind its Gabriel Connection Technology and VirnetX's secure domain and VPN-on-demand approach, rather than selling a product of its own at scale. Its real asset is the litigation-backed patent estate, which has produced large past payouts from Apple and others, so the equity is really a bet on whether further licensing or settlement revenue arrives. Reported revenue grew roughly 4,700% year on year, but that comes off a near-zero base and is lumpy, while operating margin sits near -17,640%, so the top line tells you little about an operating business. At a market cap of about $43 million and a forward P/E of 3.6, the market is pricing in a meaningful, but uncertain, stream of patent monetization. The score of 44/100 and the absence from any index suggest the name merits a look only if you have a view on the timing and size of future settlements.
