Overview
ACCE thesis
LendingTree operates a online marketplace where consumers compare mortgage, personal loan, credit card, and insurance offers, and sells the resulting leads to lenders and insurers, with its ValuePenguin and Monito brands adding comparison content and deal sites. Its edge is the scale of its consumer traffic and its lender network, which together make the platform hard to replicate and lift gross margin to 96.4% because the marginal lead carries little cost. Revenue growth of 25.3% suggests the business is regaining share in a credit cycle that has hurt many of its peers, and operating margin of 7.8% shows that growth is starting to reach the bottom line. The stock screens cheaply at 1.9 times trailing earnings and 3.5 times forward earnings, with an 82.8% return on equity that partly reflects a thin equity base. The main question for a deeper look is whether a lead-generation model tied to mortgage and lending volumes can sustain this growth and margin profile as rates and origination activity move.
