Overview
ACCE thesis
Teradata sells data analytics software and services, anchored by its Vantage cloud platform and the on-premises analytic database that many large enterprises still run their most demanding workloads on. Its moat is switching cost: the company's customers have spent years building queries and pipelines on its architecture, and a 61.3% gross margin reflects that pricing power. Revenue growth has stalled at 0.5%, so the investment case rests on margin discipline and the shift toward recurring cloud revenue rather than top-line expansion. At a 6.6 trailing P/E and 12.5 forward P/E, the market is pricing in little growth, while the 11.9% operating margin and a 119.1% ROE (which is inflated by a small equity base and leverage, so it should be read with care) suggest the cash generation is real. Worth a deeper look if you can get comfortable that the cloud migration is converting customers without eroding the installed base, since that determines whether the low multiple is a mispricing or a fair reflection of a business that is not growing.
