Overview
ACCE thesis
Icahn Enterprises is a diversified holding company whose energy segment, CVR Energy, runs two petroleum refineries and the Wynnewood and Coffeyville fuel marketing and nitrogen fertilizer businesses, so the stock is a bet on refining margins as much as on Carl Icahn's conglomerate structure. Its main edge is a captive, integrated network of refining and fertilizer assets in the mid-continent, which can shift output between fuels and nitrogen products as spreads move. Revenue grew 25.7% over the period in our data, though that reflects commodity pass-through more than volume gains, and the company is still loss-making at the operating line, with an operating margin of -8.6% and a 7.1% gross margin. The near-term swing factor is refining crack spreads and whether the energy segment returns to profitability, which the trailing numbers do not yet show. At a forward P/E of 28.8 on a company with negative returns on equity (-17.8%), the stock prices in a recovery that the current fundamentals have not delivered, and the 41/100 score reflects that gap, so a deeper look is warranted mainly to test how much of the rebound is already in the price.
