Overview
ACCE thesis
Green Plains produces fuel-grade ethanol at its plants across the U.S. Midwest and sells it along with distillers grains and, increasingly, low-carbon ethanol aimed at the 45Z clean fuel credit. Its edge is an operating base with unusually high cash margins for a commodity producer, with an operating margin of 15.2% and a return on equity of 15.5% despite revenue shrinking 19.3% over the past year as ethanol prices fell. The near-term catalyst is the ramp of carbon capture and sequestration at its plants, which would lower carbon intensity and widen the premium on its product if the 45Z credit framework holds. At a trailing P/E of 8.9 and a forward P/E of 9.1, the market is pricing little recovery in earnings, so the case rests on whether top-line weakness is cyclical or structural. This is a 57/100 name that warrants a deeper look at margin sensitivity to corn and ethanol spreads before anything else.
