Overview
ACCE thesis
JCDecaux sells out-of-home advertising: street furniture, transport shelters and billboards under long-term concession contracts with cities, airports and transit operators across Europe, Asia and the Americas. The moat is the concession base itself, since renewals are awarded in tenders where incumbents with a track record and scale tend to win, and it is hard for a rival to replicate that footprint from scratch. Growth is coming from revenue of 3.8% a year and the shift of ad budgets toward physical media that can be measured through digital screens and audience data. At 16.4 times trailing earnings and 15.8 times forward, with a 16.1% return on equity and an 8.7% operating margin, the stock is priced for steady execution rather than a rerating, which makes the question for a deeper look whether margins can widen from here. The thin operating margin against a 51.7% gross margin means small changes in concession costs or contract wins move earnings a lot, so the work is in the renewal calendar and the cost base.
