Overview
ACCE thesis
Unicharm makes disposable hygiene products, mainly baby diapers, feminine care pads and adult incontinence products, sold under the Moony and Sofy brands across Japan, China, Southeast Asia and beyond. Its structural edge is brand strength in a category where repeat purchase is habitual and private-label competition has been limited, which supports a 40.0% gross margin. Growth should come from Asian markets where diaper and adult incontinence penetration is still low relative to Japan, and from the ageing-population tailwind in adult care. The stock screens oddly: trailing P/E is 28.0 while forward P/E is 5.7, a gap that usually reflects a sharp expected jump in earnings or a one-off charge rolling out of the trailing figures, and that is the first thing to verify. Revenue growth of 6.9% and a 13.1% operating margin are respectable for a defensive staple, though ROE of 8.3% is modest and needs explaining. Index membership is none, so liquidity and ownership base are worth checking before sizing.
