What changed

$USFD just recorded a +12-point move in its ACCE composite score, climbing from 44 to 56 out of 100. That's a meaningful single-step jump for a Consumer Defensive name, where scores tend to move gradually. The current breakdown tells the story clearly: Momentum 90, Value 62, Growth 31, Quality 39.

A score move of this size almost always reflects a sharp improvement in one or two subscores rather than a broad lift across all four. Given that Momentum already sits at 90 — the standout figure in the entire breakdown — the most likely driver is continued price and earnings-trend strength feeding into that subscore. $USFD has returned +26.6% over the past year, and that kind of sustained outperformance accumulates quickly in momentum-weighted models.

Value at 62 is the second-strongest pillar. With a forward P/E of 23.1 against a trailing P/E of 34.3, the market is pricing in meaningful near-term earnings improvement, and the model appears to give partial credit for that compression. A FCF yield of 4.2% adds further support to the value reading — that's a real cash return on a business trading at $99.58 with a $22.43B market cap.

YoY earnings growth of +6.1% on revenue growth of +2.8% shows the company is expanding margins at the bottom line faster than the top line, which is exactly what you want to see in a low-margin food distribution business. Net margin sits at 1.7%, typical for the sector, and ROE of 15.1% suggests the business generates reasonable returns on its equity base. Earnings quality is flagged as strong in the data, which likely contributed to any Quality subscore improvement — though at 39, Quality remains the weakest link.

What it means

The score move is real and the momentum signal is hard to argue with. Analyst consensus sits at a $105.25 target, roughly 5.7% above the current $99.58 price — a modest but positive gap.

The caution flag is the 6-model fair value estimate of $75.62, which sits 24.1% below the current price. That divergence between the analyst target and the model-derived fair value is wide, and it matters. The ACCE score reflects relative strength across multiple dimensions, but it does not override valuation risk. A stock can score well on momentum and still be trading above what fundamentals support.

Growth at 31 is also a soft spot. Revenue growing at +2.8% is steady but not exciting, and the Growth subscore reflects that. If earnings growth accelerates or the company demonstrates stronger top-line momentum in coming quarters, that subscore has room to move — and with it, the composite.

For now, $USFD has earned its score upgrade. The momentum is genuine, the cash generation is solid, and the earnings trend is moving in the right direction. The valuation gap, however, is worth watching closely. See the full scorecard and live price at acceinvestments.com/stocks/USFD.
