Overview
ACCE thesis
ViaSat builds satellite broadband terminals, ground network equipment and the government and defense communications systems that sit on top of them, and it runs its own satellite fleet. The bull case rests on the installed base and the push into defense and multi-orbit services, where the company can sell capacity across geostationary and low-earth-orbit networks rather than just hardware. Revenue is shrinking slightly (-1.2%), margins are thin (4.4% operating), and return on equity is near zero, so the earnings base is not yet doing much for shareholders. At 144.9 times forward earnings the market is pricing in a sharp recovery in profitability, which makes this a name to examine closely for evidence of margin inflection rather than one to assume it. The composite score of 53/100 reflects that split between a strategically relevant franchise and weak current financial returns.
