Overview
ACCE thesis
Pitney Bowes sells postage meters, mailing and shipping software, and a parcel-delivery service, and it earns recurring rental and service revenue from its installed base of equipment. Its moat rests on that installed base and on being embedded in corporate mail and shipping workflows, which gives it sticky customers and high margins even as physical mail volumes decline. Revenue fell 2.3%, so the investment case depends on whether the shipping and software business can offset the shrinking mail franchise and turn that cash into durable free cash flow. At a forward P/E of 7.2 against a trailing 13.9, the market is pricing in a meaningful earnings decline, and a 21.7% operating margin on a $2.3 billion market cap is enough to justify a closer look at the balance sheet and the pace of the shipping segment's growth.
