Overview
ACCE thesis
Canadian Solar makes crystalline silicon solar modules, battery energy storage systems through its e-Storage unit, and utility-scale project development, and it is one of the largest module suppliers globally by shipments. The structural case rests on its vertical integration and its storage business, which is growing faster than its module division and is less exposed to the price collapse that has hit polysilicon and modules. The near-term picture is weak: revenue is down 28.7% year on year, operating margin is -5.9%, return on equity is -6.0%, and gross margin of 17.6% leaves little cushion against continued module price pressure. The forward P/E of 21.5 is not cheap for a company with negative operating earnings, so the multiple depends on the storage ramp and a turn in module pricing that the current numbers do not yet show. The score of 30/100 and absence from any index are consistent with a name that needs evidence of margin recovery before it earns a deeper look.
