ACCE thesis

Coherent makes the transceiver modules, semiconductor lasers, and compound semiconductors that move data inside AI hyperscaler data centers - the optical interconnect layer that Nvidia's GPUs depend on to actually communicate at scale. Their vertical integration across substrates, epitaxy, and chip fabrication gives them a cost and yield advantage that pure-play module assemblers cannot replicate, and it's the same stack that locked in design wins with Microsoft, Google, and Meta. The near-term catalyst is the ramp of 800G transceivers and the early pull-forward of 1.6T orders, where Coherent holds a technology lead over II-VI's legacy competitors and is shipping ahead of Lumentum. Revenue grew 20.5% last year and the street is pricing a re-acceleration, with forward PE compressing from 169x trailing to 43x - that gap reflects a business flipping from restructuring drag to operating leverage as CEO Jim Anderson exits the cost-cut phase and pushes gross margins toward the low-40s. At $69B market cap, the stock prices in execution, but the 800G-to-1.6T upgrade cycle running through 2025-2026 is a hard spending commitment from customers who have no alternative supplier with equivalent vertical depth.

Investor warnings · 4 flags
  • high
    Extreme valuation multiples
P/E of 153.8 and EV/EBITDA of 52.6 price in near-perfection; any earnings miss risks sharp de-rating despite forward P/E of 32.9.
  • high
    ACCE Value score near zero
Value sub-score of 17/100 signals the stock is significantly overpriced relative to fundamentals at current $310 price.
  • moderate
    Insider selling, no buying
Last 10 disclosed transactions show $4.94M in sales and $0 in buys, suggesting insiders see limited near-term upside.
  • moderate
    Thin net margin vs valuation
Net margin of only 7.1% underpins a P/S of 9.6x; profitability remains fragile relative to the premium being paid.
