Overview
ACCE thesis
Euro Tech Holdings sells water and wastewater treatment equipment, emission control systems and related engineering services, largely into Asian industrial and municipal projects, which makes it a project-driven business that books revenue lumpily. The case for a closer look rests on a sub-$12 million equity value priced at a forward P/E of 7.1 against a trailing P/E of 72.5, which says the market expects earnings to recover from a very thin base rather than that the business is already profitable. Revenue fell 9.2% and operating margin sits at just 1.8% on a 27.7% gross margin, so the spread between gross and operating profit is where any turnaround would have to show up. The name is too small and illiquid for any index membership, so the question for a portfolio manager is whether order intake and margin repair are visible enough to justify the work, given that current return on equity is only 1.0%.
