Overview
ACCE thesis
Ibiden makes multilayer package substrates, the high-density boards that sit between advanced logic and memory chips and the printed circuit board, and it is one of the few suppliers qualified to build them at the scale that AI accelerator packages now require. Its moat is process know-how and qualification history rather than a patent wall: substrate yields are hard to replicate, and customers switch slowly once a part is validated. The near-term driver is demand for high-end substrates from AI GPU and custom accelerator programs, which has pushed revenue growth to 26.4% and lifted operating margin to 21.1% on a 32.0% gross margin. The stock is no longer cheap on trailing earnings, with a P/E of 73.9, but the forward multiple of 27.8 implies the market expects earnings to roughly catch up with the revenue run-rate, which makes the next few reporting periods the real test. Worth a deeper look if you want exposure to the packaging bottleneck in AI hardware, with the caveat that ROE of 12.7% says the business has not yet converted its growth into outsized returns on equity.
