Thèse ACCE

Moderna develops mRNA-based vaccines and therapeutics, with its commercial portfolio currently anchored by COVID-19 vaccine Spikevax while its pipeline spans RSV, influenza, personalized cancer vaccines, and rare disease programs across 48 development candidates. The mRNA platform itself is the moat - once the manufacturing and delivery infrastructure is proven at scale, incremental programs carry dramatically lower development risk than traditional biologics, and Moderna has now validated that at commercial volumes no other pure-play mRNA company has matched. The near-term catalyst is the personalized cancer vaccine program (mRNA-4157) in partnership with Merck, where Phase 3 data in melanoma is expected in 2025 and a positive readout would reprice the pipeline entirely. At $18.9B market cap with roughly $9B in cash and investments on the balance sheet, you're paying a modest premium to cash for a platform that generated $18B in revenue just two years ago - the bear case is a COVID-endemic revenue collapse that's already largely priced in, but the bull case requires only one or two pipeline successes to justify a materially higher valuation. The gross margin turning deeply negative (-69.9%) reflects the brutal reality of underutilized manufacturing capacity built for pandemic-era volumes, and the path back to profitability runs directly through pipeline diversification, not COVID booster cycles.
